3 Ways To Support The Working Moms On Your Team

3 Ways To Support The Working Moms On Your Team Want to be a workplace that truly supports motzu sichbeis? That begins with getting buy-in from employees in key supervisory positions. If thats you and youre reading this, were making progressIts true, every workplace is different, just as the needs of every working mom on your team is different. So you wont find a one-size-fits-all prescription here (and trust me, you dont want one). Rather, Ill be delving into some of the larger themes of mama-positive management strategies that Ive found have worked for me, both as a working mom and a business owner. Lets dive inAsk HerI know what youre thinking. Duh, Lisa. However, what might seem like a no brainer is often dismissed. If youve got a working mom on the team, set aside some time to ask her what works best for her. What works for one mama wont necessarily work for another. Dont assume that shell want increased flexibility or greater work from home capabilities. She might find it easie r to reinforce the boundaries between home and work life if she maintains a more structured office-based day, and prefer to work in that manner. The same goes for celebrations of motherhood. Too often Ive seen corporate baby showers thrown during office hours with little to no warning given to the mother-to-be. Celebrations are awesome, but only when the celebrant is in the know. After your expecting coworker has delivered her baby news to you, ask her how (and if) shed like to tell the rest of the team.Champion HerWomen are notorious for systematically undervaluing our skills, especially at work. Were here to do the work, do it well and get it done. Were also incredible advocates when it comes to recognizing and encouraging talent in those around us, but self-advocating? Lets just say were getting better. In the meantime, look to your team and help them vocalize their worth. Whether it be a compliment on a project, anappreciationfor their work ethic, or just a simple job well done Do nt let your admiration build up until performance review time, be a champion for your working mamas throughout the work cycle.Make aya youre also championing your working mom even when shes not in the room. If shes the perfect fit for a big new client - mention her If she would make a great speaker at your next conference - recommend her If she deserves a raise - talk numbers A cheerleader takes energy, but a champion takes action.Amplify HerMake sure that your working mamas ideas are attributed to her. Theres been a renewed awareness for genderedintellectual misattribution, especially in the workplace. If men repeat the same sentiment as their female coworkers, theyre more likely to do it louder, and more likely to get credit for the original thought. As a manager, you can help combat this phenomenon by ensuring that credit is given to the working mothers on your team where credit is due. When a mama pipes in with a fresh perspective, take a second to acknowledge and attribute her i dea to her, Awesome Kelly, that might be exactly the solution were looking for. Or if you notice misattribution happening further into a conversation, reel it back in with a simple, I really like the way youve built off of Kellys thoughts here.It doesnt take very long, but will make a noticeable difference in the visibility of your working mamas contributions to your team.Perhaps these are little things, but to the working mamas - me and so many others Ive worked alongside - the effect is immense. Plus, the effect amplifies as recipients are encouraged to do these very things to the mamas coming up behind them.--Lisa Durante is a Toronto-based working mama who believes in the power of AND. How to Handle Business Blunders

How to Handle Business Blunders So you made a mistake at work. Maybe you forgot to follow protocol or you blew a big sale. Dont panic, its not the end of the world. While you cant change what happened, you can still turn the situation around in your favor if you handle it properly. If you made a business blunder, here are a few moves that you can use to save faceOwn up to your mistake First things first admit that you were wrong. Dont try to hide the error or pass the blame. Proper acceptance allows you to think rationally, and understand where you went wrong. It also gives you a better idea of your available options and how to frame the situation to your boss or supervisor. Be prepared for admonishments or other consequences. Whatever happens, know that at the very least, your superior will admire your honesty and integrity.Be parte of the solution You cant change the past, so why not affect posi tive change going forward? You now have an opportunity to prove yourself under the pressure of a past mistake. Do whatever it takes to see if you can fix the initial error call back the customer, apologize to your co-worker, offer to re-work the presentation, etc. If you find that its too late to fix and the moment has passed, then focus on future developments. Reconciliation is an ongoing process. Make sure to have a plan of action and a concrete solution before talking to your management.Learn from the error Your reputation may be momentarily tarnished, but the experience you gained is ever lasting. Workplace learning is a bumpy road no one ever said it would be without challenges. Extract the essential lesson from the experience and make it part of your business strategy.Move on Dont be crushed by self-doubt or fear of making another mistake. You cant live in the past. At the end of the day, you should be little wiser. Chin up and get your business face back on. Make sure that i f your blunder was because of a system, versus a careless error (for example, forgetting what a customer wanted because you dont use standardized order forms), change the system. Make sure that you are set up to succeed in your job nothing is as important.Theres a popular job interview question that asks Tell me about a time when you made a mistake or did something you would approach differently if you had the opportunity The interviewer, of course, is testing to see if youre honest with yourself and if you can learn from your mistakes.A candidate that claims to have never made a mistake is undesirable in the eyes of the employer because knowing failure is a necessary part of achieving success. While initially challenging, your workplace blunder can be turned into an opportunity for learning and self-discovery. Use the experience as a springboard rather than a sinking pit youll find yourself back on your feet in no time. Unless you burned down your workplace, you have every chance to recover and come back better than before. Good luck out there

Women are less likely to achieve last name fame

Women are less likely to achieve last name fameWomen are less likely to achieve last name fameWe all know a guy whos known by his last name. His high school friends call him by his last name. His teammates in college called him by his last name. And now in his professional career, even his coworkers call him, solely, by his last name. Hes achieved that last name fame. Think about it - you recognize the names Tesla, Edison, Einstein, and Shakespeare, right? Now think of as many women who are famous by their last names. Go ahead Ill wait Coming up with women whove achieved last name fame is a lot harder. And new research looks into why professional women are less likely to be known just as their last name. The study, How Gender Determines the Way We Speak About Professionals, conducted by Cornell University psychologists and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that, on average, men and women alike are mora than twice as likely to call male profes sionals (even fictional ones) by their last names only, than they are to call female professionals by their last names only.It may not seem like a big deal, but the researchers are concerned that this difference in naming habits may actually perpetuate gender biases. The research shows that, when men are referred to only by their surnames, they are perceived as more important and eminent than the women, who are more often referred to by both their first and last names. The research also suggests that these habits reinforce perceptions that men are more significant and memorable. This study isnt the first to look into how names affect women in the workplace. A wealth of research suggests that your name could make or break your career. Here are eight other time names affect working women.1. Women With Difficult-to-Pronounce Names Are Less FavoredA New York University study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that professionals names that were easier to pron ounce were more likely to have higher-status positions in the workplace.2. Women With Less Common Names Are Less Likely to Be HiredA Marquette University found that women with more common names are more common new-hires.3. Women With Names That Sound White Are mora Likely to Be HiredA study from The American Economic Review found that women with more white-sounding names received 50 percent more call-backs than women with perceived black-sounding names. In fact, the researchers suggested that white-sounding names are worth as much as eight years of work experience.4. Women Who Use Their Middle Initial Are Taken More SeriouslyResearch published in the European Journal of Social Psychology suggests that, when women use their middle initial, it makes them appear more intellectual and of a higher social status to others. For example, essayists who use their middle initial in published works had better reviews of their writing quality.5. Women With Gender-Neutral Names Are More Likely to Achieve SuccessA study called From Lawyer to Judge Advancement, Sex, and Name-Calling found that women with masculine names like Leslie, Jan or Cameron tend to be more successful in legal careers. In general, women in male-dominated fields (i.e. engineering, technology, banking, etc.) with masculine or at least gender-neutral names are more successful.6. Women in Leadership Are More Likely to Use Their Full NamesIn a study by LinkedIn found that women in leadership (unlike men in leadership who tend to shorten their names, like Bob and Fred) are more likely to use their full names to project professionalism.7. Women With the Same Initials as Their Coworkers Are Better CollaboratorsWomen and men alike tend to produce more accurate work and mediate conflicts better when theyre working with others who share their initials. For example, a Jessica works better with a Jane, Jasmine and Julie than a Sara, Lydia and Amy, according to research from the Wisconsin School of Business.8. Women With the Highest Earnings Are Named LizA global survey by job site Adzuna revealed that the highest-earning female name is Liz. Still, Liz typically earns more than $30,000 less than the highest-earning male name, Ed - thats a salary of about $52,000 on average, while Ed earns about $82,000.A version of this post previously appeared onFairygodboss, the largest career community that helps women get the inside scoop on pay, corporate culture, benefits, and work flexibility.
